DAY 7 Thursday Sep 5, 2019:
We did not have any special agenda for
the day.
Continued around RT 76 towards Hosfos making various stops along the way to take in the amazing views.
AKUREYRI:
Akureyri is the unofficial capital of north Iceland and next
to Reykjavik is the most populated place in Iceland. We went
round Akureyri.
Went to the church. The Akureyrarkirkja
church has a different style comparing to Hallgrimskirkja in
Reykjavik, although they are the children of the same father -
architect Gudjon Samuelsson.
Next was the Botanical garden. The
northernmost botanical garden Lystigardurinn is perfect for
a pleasant walk in the floral delight.
We went to the pier next.
This Christmas village
was pretty.... though just a shop with trinkets.
Húsavík:
Our first stop was Húsavík, which
is the whale watching capital of Iceland. The country
boasts around 20 different whale species, and whale watching
excursions are an extremely popular activity here. Some of the
cetaceans swimming in and out of Húsavík’s tranquil Skjálfandi
bay are minke whales, blue whales, fin whales, humpback whales,
orcas, and harbor porpoises among others.
We parked near the church.
We parked near the church.
Had even planned to go to Asbygri
canyon from Husavik as that road is not bad like the gravel road from
Dettifoss. We were running out of time, so turned back.
Tröllaskagi Peninsula:
Again made it a point to avoid the toll
tunnel and drove the Tröllaskagi Peninsula.
Made our way towards the town
of Dalvik.
The scenery driving around the peninsula is just great.
Continued around RT 76 towards Hosfos making various stops along the way to take in the amazing views.
Siglufjordur is also lovely with multi-colored buildings right on the water, with beautiful snow capped mountains.
Gladheimar Cottages at Blonduos:
Our accommodation was before Hvitserkur... Gladheimar cottages at Blonduos.
