SPAIN 2022 Trip Report, DAY 3: BLANES, GIRONA

DAY 3, MAY 8, Sunday 2022, MOTHERS DAY:

Aqueduct, then drive to Girona via Blanes, Tossa del Mar. Drove the scenic GI 682 AUDI advertisement  road to Sant Feliu de Guixols. Plan was to also visit small medieval towns like Begur [hit up Aigua Blava], Pals, Peratallada (there are many more)  before reaching Girona but had to skip due to paucity of time.

STAY: Ibis, Girona, Costa Brava

Checked out of our hotel. It's a pedestrianized square in the old town but we can bring the car for loading/unloading. A police car stopped seeing our car parked there with the boot open and the cop went on when we told him we are just leaving

We clicked on this map with the wifi in the hotel, so that we can hit up all the scenic spots before reaching our base Girona. It was a long drive plannes for that day... the longest in the 10 day trip. 306 km , 5h 8 min

PLAN

Pal was to Add an hour each at Blanes and Tossa de Mar, I put in La Pola/Giverola, so that we can drive the scenic GI 682 AUDI ad road to Sant Feliu de Guixols then also visit small medieval towns like Begur [hit up Aigua Blava], Pals, Peratallada (there are many more) before reaching Girona.
But in reality, we missed the scenic coastal road from Sitges to Casteldefells, we had just gone by the hwy. We spent quite a bit of time looking for the botanical gardens in Blanes and landmarks in Tossa del Mar. Also did not have tine for the small villages Begur etc. It was still a very scenic and enjoyable ride.

Car had a display connecting the phone, so the map was visible with GPS directions So cool!

We had to see Tarragona sight Aqueduct before the drive.

Acueducto Pont de les Ferreres (Roman Aqueduct)

About four kilometers from Tarragona is the Acueducto Pont de les Ferreres, also known as the Puente del Diablo (Devil's Bridge) after a local legend. The aqueduct was built during the era of Emperor Augustus and restored during the Moorish reign of Caliph Abd-al Rahman III. Originally, the structure extended for 25 kilometers in length. All that remains now are ruins of a few hundred meters long and 27 meters high, however this is plenty enough to be able to appreciate the magnificent feat of engineering. Two rows of immense arches support the water channel that once carried water from the Francolí river.

Address: CN-240 de Valls a Lleida,

BLANES

Blanes has gorgeous beaches and rocky coves, beautiful churches, a pretty old town and beach promenade, impressive monuments or landmarks . Blanes is also next to the lively beach resort of Lloret de Mar and just one hour away from Barcelona.

Castell de Sant Joan de Blanes

We drove up  the San Juan hill ('Sant Joan' in Catalan) to the castle of the same name. Its location is 173 metres high, right at the top.

There are free parking spots available. There was a spectacular view on Blanes, the port, its beaches and the coastline,

Botanical garden Marimurtra

We drove around
Lovely posh localities.

Botanical garden Marimurtra was not open, nor was another beautiful and famous botanical garden is Pinya de Rosa. We wasted a lot of time circling around

Tossa de Mar

Tossa de Mar is a pretty town with cobbled streets, constructed around a magnificent ancient castle. The beautiful mountainous hinterland with lush green valleys, gorges and natural springs creates a stunning backdrop. We coild not get to the walled part to our disappointment.

GI682, SCENIC DRIVE

the best scenic drive along the Costa Brava is along the GI682, between Tossa de Mar and Sant Feliu de Guixols. It was used in Audi's 2016 advertising for their R8 Spyder. However, it is not for the faint-hearted; magnificent views and lots of hairpin bends, along high cliffs.

Sant Feliu de Guíxols

Monestir de Sant Feliu de Guíxols

Monestir de Sant Feliu de Guíxols is a Benedictine monastery in Sant Feliu de Guíxols. It was first referenced around the year 961, and was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural landmark in 1931.

The Romanesque building is an excellent example of the town's medieval architecture and has been remodeled several times. It includes the Porta Ferrada, the symbol of the town, as well as two towers. It houses a history museum

Arc de Sant Benet, Ruins in Sant Feliu de Guíxols

This elegant 18th-century arch in front of the Monestir de Sant Feliu de Guíxols stands alone, the walls connecting it to the monastery complex long demolished

It was already 6 pm, we decided reluctantly to skip the villages on our plan and drove strsight to our hotel

IBIS GIRONA COSTA BRAVA

Located just outside the historic center of Girona
The Triple  room was spacious, and we got free parking right outside the reception area.

· Would have been nice to get some Shelves to keep clothes, but there was ample space nevertheless.

We had planned to drive into the historic center and see the cathedral which is open till 8. But we were so tired, we had our food and called it a day.
