WHEN TO GO:
We wanted to avoid summer heat and crowds. This year Europe was experiencing drought and high temperatures. We chose Sep 15-Oct, temperature had come down, it was cool and pleasant and there were no crowds.
WHAT TO SEE?
The initial plan was to fly into Nice, rent a car and enjoy the French Riviera/ Cote d'Azur' then fly to Croatia for 10 days.
Car rental price at Nice was high, so were the flights to Nice and also to Croatia. Timings were inconvenient too.
We checked the car rental rate at CDG, Paris airport. AVIS was quite nominal, through Booking.com , we booked from 12 noon Sep 16 to Oct 4. Peugeot 2008 automatic transmission, 860 EUROS, Sep 16-Oct 4, 18 days. We took full insurance for 200 euros from Booking.com through whom we had booked the car,
To reach Riviera, we planned to pass through the Champagne region and include the Alps as well.
Loire valley chateaux were another priority. We included French Pyrenees as prior May holiday had covered Spanish Pyrenees.

EPERNAY: Stroll along Avenue de Champagne, home to the Hotel de Ville and many villas belonging to rich wine merchants (Moët et Chandon, Perrier Jouet, Pol Roger, or Mercier). Known as the ‘World’s Most Expensive Avenue,’ thousands of bottles of the best champagne are kept in large cellars built below the grounds of Avenue de Champagne!
