Vietnam and Cambodia Trip Report, 2025 Day 3: 5.30 AM Flight to Da Nang, Da Nang Marble Mountain [Thuy Son], Quan The Am Pagoda in Kim Son Mountain

 Day 3 Saturday Apr 19:

5.30 AM Flight to Da Nang, Da Nang Marble Mountain, Quan Am Pagoda  at the foot of Kim Son mountain

We took the early morning VIETJET flight at 5:30 AM from the Ho Chi Minh City Airport . It was convenient in a sense because the road was empty and the airport familiarities were also very easy as it was so early. at Danang airport our checked bag came through early and we got a grab and reached our apartment hotel. We got a welcome drink. our apartment was not ready. we had some food in our bag, the rotis and relish I had brought, we ate that, bought some water and yogurt from a nearby convenience store, kept our bags at the reception and took a grab to the marble mountains

Marble Mountains / Ngu Hanh Son

Situated 8 kilometers away from Da Nang city center, Marble Mountains is a cluster of five limestone peaks.  Each mountain was named after one of the five elements of Eastern philosophy: metal, water, fire, wood and earth.

According to Cham legend, one day a dragon flew to Non Nuoc Beach and laid an egg there. After a while, the egg hatched and a beautiful girl stepped out of the egg. The egg shell was broken into 5 pieces that became the five magical mountains as we see today.

Marble Mountains is home to a network of caves, tunnels, towers, and pagodas built by Mahayana Buddhists and the Nguyen Dynasty Kings. So it's a fun outing and a top tourist attraction!

Below is the map of all 5, Thuy Son [water mountain] is the largest and most famous of the five Marble Mountains and is ticketed, others are rugged,  free to explore

Map above shows where the lift is and the orientation of attractions. We enjoyed them in sequence

The entrance fee is 40,000 VND and the elevator [to avoid climbing 150 steep slippery steps] is 15,000 VND one way. Board here with the funny translation...😄😄

Xá Lợi Tower

After taking the elevator, we were near Xa Loi Tower. We saw a beautiful view of the Non Nuoc Beach and the mountains surrounded by the local neighborhoods.

The tower is 28 meter high, has 7 floors and 6 sides. The tower represents the core values of Buddhism. For example, the 7 floors represent the 7 types of human emotions, including happiness, anger, love, resentment, greediness, hatred, and delusion. The 6 sides represent the 6 senses: vision, hearing, taste, smell, touch, and perception. Inside and outside the tower, there are more than 200 Buddha statues.

Arhats

Quan am [Goddess of Mercy]

Linh Ung Pagoda

The pagoda has a long history from the Gia Long king era around the 17th century; hence, the pagoda is already hundreds of years old.

in the middle of the pagoda is a 10m high statue of Buddha Shakyamuni, flanked on two sides by worshiping Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara and Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha.

Outside Linh Ung Pagoda, a huge Buddha statue is situated in a garden.

Tàng Chơn Cave

“Tang Chon” means a place that contains all the truths of the universe. The cave has a small valley that is about 10m long, 7m wide. The cave ceiling is open towards the sky, which facilitates the circulation of the wind and brings down the temperature. Inside there is a shrine to worship gods that bring happiness and luck to people.Tang Chon Cave is situated in the back of Linh Ung Pagoda

Linh Nham Cave has three gods: Ngoc Hoang, Nam Cao and Bac Dau. There is a folk tale that every December 23rd of the lunar calendar, these gods visit  the humans  and help them with their magical capabilities.

Động Huyền Không/ Huyền Không Cave

Huyen Khong Cave is one of the largest caves in the Marble Mountains, an ancient sanctuary guarded by Buddha gods. There is a Buddha God – Phật Thích Ca of 3 meter high placed in the center of the cave. There are smaller temples placed on the left and right that worship Ngoc Phi to bring in the wealth and Loi Phi to bring in the health for people.

Many years ago, during the war, the Vietnamese army base used this cave as a secret hidden place to plan strategies, train soldiers, and treat injured soldiers. Huyen Khong Cave is the most beautiful cave in Ngu Hanh Son. The cave is open-air and has a very unique and impressive structure with circular arches leading to the outside, so it is always filled with light.

Tam Thai Pagoda

We came back to the entrance and bought the separate ticket for Hell Cave

HELL CAVE/ Động Âm Phủ

separate entry  20.000vnd. The cave is massive and tall. Contains different meditation spots on the first floor with a stairway to heaven (uniquely challenging but absolutely worth it) and a stairway to hell.
As one of the large caves in the Ngu Hanh Son cluster, Am Phu cave is a natural cave with a mysterious, gloomy look and many nooks and crannies deep underground that lead to the gates of hell.

MARBLE VILLAGE/ Non Nuoc Stone Carving Village

We browsed through the shops before calling a GRAB

Quan The Am Pagoda in Kim Son Mountain

The pagoda is located at the foot of Kim Son mountain – one of the five mountains of the Marble Mountains. Very beautiful place with no visitors!!

Porcelain paintings

The Pagoda has a set of 16 porcelain paintings that have been recognized as setting a Vietnamese record.

The 16 porcelain paintings are attached to the walls of four towers in the pagoda, including Phuoc Hue tower, Thai Hoa tower, Thanh Tuu tower and Vien Man tower. The paintings were assembled from small pieces of porcelain by artisans from Hanoi’s Bat Trang ancient pottery village.

The 16 paintings have a total area of 192 sq m. Each painting has its own meaning and features famous landscapes of Vietnam.

COMMENTS ON THE DAY :

Regarding the very early 5:30 AM flight it turned out to be a great decision because we arrived early at Da Nang and were able to go about sightseeing for the day. Vietjet flight experience was perfect, on time, courteous staff.  I think we probably dozed on the plane and we were not one bit tired. We were on the Marble Mountains by 9:30; it opens by 7:00 AM and it would have been great to have been there that early but obviously we had arrived from Ho Chi Minh City only on that day!

reviews warned about the heat and humidity yes it was humid and a bit hot but quite manageable. there was a lot of climbing throughout but there were places you could sit around for a few minutes and a bit of shade so it was all easily manageable. regarding the pagodas there they were beautiful with amazing intricate workmanship. The caves were cool [Literally and figuratively ]And a unique experience. Some of them were very well ventilated with a cool breeze coming in, a couple of them had the stink of batshit I do hope they can put up nets at the openings to block bats!

the Quan am Pagoda in Kim Son Mountain was totally empty except for a couple of devotees. they had come up to the top floor alter taking a lift. We had not even realised there was one available; we had climbed all the steps but anyway even that was totally worth it because of all the beautiful statues and architecture as well as the views at each level. On the whole it had been a perfect day
