SPAIN 2022 Trip Report, DAY 14, Part 2: BARCELONA: Museu Frederic Marès

Museu Frederic Marès

The Museu Frederic Marès is one of the most important sculpture museums in Spain. Presented is the collection of the sculptor Frederic Marès, during his lifetime from 1893-1991 . The museum has one of the most important collection of Spanish sculptures from the 12th to 19 Century. It is housed in a former palace of the Inquisition in the district Barri Gòtic, just behind the cathedral. Entry is 4, 20 euros

ANTIQUITY

The museum was opened between 1946 and 1948. Frederic Marès, aged 51 at the time, wanted to donate his collection to the city of Barcelona because he had no more room available to keep it in. The city happily obliged and has continually benefited ever since: Marès lived to the venerable age of 99 and remained a collector for much of that time.
When the museum, too, ran out of space, Marès began to gift some of the items to other museums, and even opened an additional museum in Montblanc!

The building itself is historically relevant, too – it’s part of the royal palace in the Gothic district! The palace was constructed as early as the 11th century, and expanded throughout the years

HALL AFTER HALL AFTER HALL OF CRUCIFIXES AND MADONNA AND CHILD STATUES

In the ground floor of the museum can be found mainly sculptures of the 3rd and 4 Century, a collection of crucifixes and statues of the Virgin Mary from the Romance and Gothic and other religious artifacts.

The courtyard is lovely. We sat there for a few minutes

We walked out and saw the Cathedral just next door. We had no energy to visit it then. We visited it on the last day of our stay. We just enjoyed the exterior
