Iceland Trip Report, Day 9: Nature's Fury... Olafsvik, Snefellsjokull national park

DAY 9 Saturday Sep 7, 2019:

The rain and heavy winds of the night continued in the morning. The weather site announced a YELLOW ALERT. Other guests at our accommodation were discussing staying put on the day. We had an early morning flight to Finland the next day and had to be at our airport hotel in Reykjavik by night. We unfortunately had left a small bag with our rain pants, umbrellas and ponchos in the car boot the previous night. We had been doing that thru out the trip but we could have been smarter given the rain the previous day. We did have our waterproof jackets with us. Our car was parked a little away from the accommodation. Son walked there and brought the car to the front of the building . Loaded our bags. As I sat inside, the car was getting pummeled by the rain and rocked by the wind. Son went inside the building to access the wifi and called the reception girl to ask for her advice if it is safe to drive to Reykjavik. She said it was. We abandoned our plans of following the coastal route, started heading for Budir.

We saw some lovely waterfalls near Grundarfjordur... all thru the window glass of our car! Kirkjufellfoss had really swelled up...

Rain continued, there were bouts of no visibility, interspersed with rainbows. Quite a bit of whiteouts like this...

We headed to Olafsvik which surprisingly had clear weather.

We loved the cute fishing village .

 Hiked to the waterfall.

  Enjoyed the church.

Then got on our way.
Stopped at Snaefellsjokull national park. Drizzles and the white out were quite off putting for me. Son went out on short hikes with an umbrella and his phone while I stayed put in the car.

Base Hotel, Keflavik:

We reached our airport hotel. The hotel is 7 km from the airport. We checked in and repacked. left one bag with the hotel for 6 days paying 3000 ISK and were flying to Helsinki with just a carry on. Iceland air 7.30 am was our flight.

We drove up to the car rental as a recce for the early morning drive the next day. tanked up the car also.

Report on day 10 in Finland is here:
