DAY 8, SWITZERLAND TRIP : Schilthorn, Gimmelwald, Stechelberg, Trummelbachfalle

Sep 5, 2015: Schilthorn, Gimmelwald, Stechelberg, Trummelbachfalle

We planned to go on via Murren to Stechelberg.
Staubbach falls from the cable car
Walked through Murren admiring the gardens especially the garden gnomes...who are supposed to work miracles during the night in return for the space to live in the garden!

We changed plans at the last minute and took the cable up without consulting weather from the meteocentrale site. It had said occasional showers when we had checked the previous evening.

There was dense fog up there and no place to sit to wait it out.

Schilthorn was the site of James Bond film shoot--so we find lots of reminders...

The movie lounge was the only place with seats and the air was thick with carbon dioxide---so we had to leave after a short disappointing wait.

However the day was saved with a nice wander thru Gimmelwald,

a good cable ride to Stechelberg, then onward bus to Trummelbachfalle.

Trummelbachfalle

Totally awesome experience going into the mountain and watch the thundering waterfall from 10 different view points! It’s the only glacier water falls in Europe inside a mountain and still accessible…upto 20000 liters of water per second gushes through…it drains the glaciers of Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau.

When we went back to Lauterbrunnen, we had a hot meal, prepared in the hotel picnic room available for guests...

We walked to the end of the village, visited the church at 5.30---lovely stained glass and an organist was playing divine music in the empty church… a soul stirring experience!

Staubbach falls:

Then we took the short trek up the hill behind Staubbach falls—free and a lovely experience. We even borrowed the trekking poles left there for free use and they did assist in the climb and descent!

Had a dessert of chocolate cake on our balcony with the company of the Staubbach falls and called it a day!

  1. Hey !

    Thanks

    1. Hello gem

Read the Europe posts and then the ones on Paris and Switzerland. You'll figure out how to plan for yourself.

Fly into Paris and out of Zurich. Enjoy the Jungfrau region... my personal favorite in Switzerland. Buy TGV ticket between Paris and Interlaken 3 months ahead for a nice discount.

  2. Thanks for replying . I have some major issues like :
    1. Should we take any train trips in Switzerland like bernia or glaciar ?
    2. As I am travelling with my parents (aged50+) I want to have a Comfortable trip for them so is it possible to have only one base in Switzerland from where we can cover the major parts or the must dos
    3. Also are 4 days enough to cover the major parts in Switzerland ?

    1. 1. Train trips Bernina, Glacier will take up a full day as you need to be at the right place to connect up... should you take them? The tourist police beats up those who don't!!

      2. There are hundreds of "major spots"/must-dos", spread over the country...I think you'll be better off reading my intros to understand your options

      3. You'll experience a very small miniscule part of the country in 4 days...that's the truth

    3. See Point 9 under Common Mistakes in the very first post about planning a trip to Switzerland:
      http://adventuretrav.blogspot.com/2016/04/switzerland-switzerland-seems-to-be.html

I feel Long train trips are a waste of time for people on a short visit

  3. Hey !
I was about to get my tickets done , but my travel agent told me he cannot book the tickets as my passport is expiring in the month of september 2017. Do you know anything on this ? As you keep travelling ...
I will apply for re-issue of my passport and it will come in another 10-15 days , still he says he can't issue the tickets with my existing passport . Is it true ?

  5. Hello Santhosh Skaria
Take a look at the official site of the place you stay and you’ll get all the options available to you… www.luzern.com/en or www.vevey.com/en etc
    Luzern:
A lake cruise all the way to Flüelen is well recommended.
mountains in the area in the order of preference (first to last) as follows: Mt. Rigi, Stanserhorn, Brienzer Rothorn, Mt. Titlis, Klewenalp/Stockhuette, Mt. Pilatus.
